    CLINIC-LABORATORY COLLABORATION2026~2 MIN

Why it's worth discussing a case with the technician

Direct communication with a dental technician can improve the quality of work more than the most expensive material.

In most laboratories, communication goes through reception or the prescription form. This works for standard restorations. For more complex cases — the lack of direct contact with the technician costs time and quality.

Information flow — reception vs. direct contact

Information Type Via reception Direct contact with technician
    Prescription acceptance, deadline Sufficient
    VITA shade confirmation Sufficient
Complex shade specification (effects, translucency) Risk of information loss Recommended
Aesthetic problems upon delivery Delayed response Necessary
Planning wax-up or pre-prep consultation Necessary

When to call the technician directly

Shade with special effects. Discolored dentin, discolored adjacent teeth, non-standard translucency — this information can sound like: similar to adjacent in the form. A direct conversation allows the technician to inquire about details.

Aesthetic cases in the smile zone. For restorations on teeth 13–23, a slight difference in surface effect can determine patient acceptance. A 5-minute conversation before production is worth more than a remake 5 days after delivery.

Clinical problems upon delivery. Occlusal correction, proximal contact correction, seating problem — the technician will respond faster and more precisely than reception.

Urgent case. Confirmation of express service availability — these decisions are made by the technician, not reception.

    What speeds up direct communication

    • Have the prescription number or photos of the work ready before calling.
    • Describe the problem by comparison: too yellow in natural light vs. lamp light.
    • Send photos before or during the conversation to the laboratory's email.
    • Technician's best availability hours: mornings before 10:00 AM or after 2:00 PM.

When to contact the technician directly and when through reception?

Reception is sufficient for standard prescriptions, deadline confirmation, and basic shade. Direct contact is advised for complex shade specifications, problematic aesthetic cases, and urgent prescriptions.

What are the best hours to call the laboratory?

Technicians are most available before 10:00 AM and after 2:00 PM — outside of peak production.

Can I consult a case with the technician before starting treatment?

Yes — and for complex aesthetic cases, it is recommended. Pre-preparation consultation helps avoid compromises during the fabrication stage.
