DSD — Digital Smile Design in Dental Lab Practice

DSD (Digital Smile Design) is a methodology for designing prosthetic aesthetics based on facial proportion analysis. In a digital workflow, instead of drawing sketches, we import patient photos into software and design the smile in the context of the face, not in isolation. The result: the dentist and patient see the aesthetic proposal before any tissue is prepared.

DSD (Digital Smile Design) is a methodology for designing prosthetic aesthetics based on facial proportion analysis. In a digital workflow, instead of drawing sketches, we import patient photos into software and design the smile in the context of the face, not in isolation. Result: the dentist and patient see the aesthetic proposal before any tissue is prepared.

    What is DSD?

DSD is a facial proportion analysis integrated with prosthetic work design. The program measures:

    • Smile line relative to the horizontal facial line
    • Midline — whether it is symmetrical
    • Tooth width proportions (golden ratio or anatomical proportions)
    • Incisal inclination angle relative to the facial profile

Based on this, the CAD technician designs the teeth according to guidelines, not arbitrary intuition. The dentist and patient approve the visualization. Only then do we proceed with production.

    Step-by-step DSD workflow

Step What the dentist does What the lab does
    1. Documentation Facial photos: frontal, profile, smiling with teeth
    2. Analysis Import photos into DSD software, measurements
    3. Proposal Discussion with patient Renders — what the smile will look like
    4. Mock-up Patient's acceptance of proportions Silicone key for non-invasive mock-up
    5. CAD Design Work design compliant with approved parameters
    6. Production Milling / 3D printing

The crucial stage is the mock-up — the patient literally tries on the future restoration without tooth preparation. If something is not satisfactory, corrections occur at the design stage, not after production.

How DSD changes clinic and lab work

Fewer misunderstandings. The dentist and lab have a common point of reference — the approved design. There is no room for "I wanted something more natural" after the work is delivered. Higher patient acceptance rate. The patient sees and approves the effect before preparation. Changes of mind after delivery are rare — the patient literally chose it themselves. Better documentation. DSD renders are proof of agreed-upon expectations. In case of a dispute over aesthetics — you have a record of what was approved.

    Limitations of the method

Requires good photographic documentation. Low-quality photos (poor lighting, bad position, lipstick on teeth) result in inaccurate analysis. It is worth training the assistant in a standard photographic protocol. Time and cost. DSD extends the pre-preparation time — an additional visit for documentation and project presentation, cost of mock-up. For patients with simple aesthetic needs, this may be an unnecessary step. Does not work without dentist's engagement. DSD requires providing good documentation and active participation of the dentist in presenting the project to the patient. Simply saying "do DSD" without clinical context will not yield a predictable result.
