Remote Case Consultations — How the Lab Helps Before Production

Before the digital workflow, the only option to discuss a complex case was by phone or an in-person visit to the lab. Now, the dentist can view a virtual design of the restoration in full 3D detail on their computer screen, in real-time, together with the CAD technician — without leaving the office. Result: instead of 2-3 days of email exchanges, you have an approved design after 30 minutes.

Now, the dentist can view a virtual design of the restoration in full 3D detail on their computer screen, in real-time, together with the CAD technician — without leaving the office. Result: instead of 2-3 days of email exchanges with questions, you have an approved design after a 30-minute meeting. Remote consultations are not just a convenience. They are a concrete mechanism to prevent adjustments, eliminate misunderstandings, and accelerate the entire process from acceptance to production.

    When remote consultation makes sense

Remote consultation is not necessary for every order. We use it strategically:

    • Full-arch reconstructions — 4+ teeth in one project, where there are hundreds of variables to discuss
    • Complex aesthetic cases — changes in color, contour, shape with multiple options to check from all angles
    • Cases after failed treatment — when a Plan B needs to be worked out together, and the patient is waiting for a solution
    • DSD or wax-up planning — before patient preparation — the dentist wants to see scenarios
    • Implant prosthetics with non-standard positioning — implants in atypical geometry require 3D visualization

For standard orders (1-3 teeth, simple crown, simple bridge), remote consultation is not needed — renderings sent by email are sufficient.

How remote consultation works — deltalabs. workflow

The standard process consists of 4 stages, each with a defined duration:

    Stage Time What happens
Preparation 24–48 h CAD technician creates a design for discussion (model, renders from various perspectives)
Meeting 20–30 min Videoconference (Zoom/Teams), technician shares CAD software screen
Live adjustments During Dentist sees changes in real-time — technician modifies the model, rotates, leaves annotations
Approval End of meeting Design approved — production begins the next business day

Instead of the traditional scheme (email → wait 4–8 h → reply → another question → another 4–8 h) — everything happens synchronously in one go. Does the dentist want to change the distal contact point? Highlight it on the screen, the technician rotates the model, changes a parameter, shows the result. A different perspective? Rotation in CAD takes a second.

What the dentist gains from remote consultation

Speed of decision. All doubts — aesthetics, occlusion, fit, dimensions — are resolved within one meeting. Fewer post-delivery adjustments. The design was discussed live and explicitly approved — when the dentist receives the restoration, it will be exactly what was approved on screen. Visibility from all angles. The technician rotates the 3D model in the software during the call — the dentist can ask for any perspective, any profile, any magnification of the margin. Better sensory communication. Showing a 3D scanner or render takes 10 seconds. Describing the same thing in text — 5 emails and several hours. Documentation. The meeting can be recorded (with mutual consent) — an archive for the patient, assistant, and case documentation.

Technical requirements — platform, equipment, schedule

Platform: Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams — dentist's choice. Many clinics already have active accounts. deltalabs. supports all three — we decide via message before the meeting. Dentist's requirements:

    • Computer or tablet with camera
    • Internet connection (approx. 5 Mbps is sufficient for smooth participation)
    • Microphone/headphones (not mandatory, but enhances comfort)

    deltalabs. requirements:

    • CAD software with screen sharing (3Shape, exocad, Fusion 360 Pro)
    • Computer tested for image stability
    • Technician booking in the calendar — the meeting is a planned activity, not chaotic

Available hours: 9:00–12:00 or 14:00–17:00, Monday–Friday. Exceptions possible by prior arrangement. Scheduling: email to deltalabs. with order number and proposed date. We respond within 4 business hours.
