Virtual Articulator — Occlusion without a Physical Device

A physical articulator costs PLN 5-20k, takes up space on the lab bench, and requires precise mounting of models. In a digital workflow, it's optional. CAD software includes a virtual articulator model, simulating mandibular movements without physical models or device mounting.

    How a virtual articulator works

The technician imports scans of the upper and lower arches into CAD software (exocad, 3Shape, Dentsply inLab). The program allows the definition of:

    • Centric occlusion (MIP/CO) — central closure of the jaws
    • Protrusive movement — forward movement of the mandible
    • Lateral movements (laterotrusion and mediotrusion) — sideways movements of the mandible

The program simulates whether teeth collide during movements, if there are lateral interferences, and if the protrusive contact is correct. All without physical models.

    Advantages of a virtual articulator

No additional equipment cost. The virtual articulator is built into CAD software — if you have a 3Shape or exocad license, you already have an articulator. Speed of iteration. Occlusion correction in CAD takes minutes. On a physical articulator, this would require new registrations or models. Archiving. Digital records allow returning to any stage of occlusion planning. You can compare several occlusion variants for one case. Integration with the project. Occlusion analysis takes place in the same environment as the design of the restoration. The technician sees collisions in the context of the entire crown or bridge project.

    Limitations of the method

Quality of input data. A virtual articulator is only as accurate as the scan. Incorrect bite registration (scan in poor occlusion) will result in an inaccurate simulation. Averaged joint parameters. A virtual articulator operates on averaged values of temporomandibular joint movements. For patients with mandibular asymmetry or TMJ dysfunction, parameters may require correction based on individual measurements. Requires training. Interpreting simulation results requires experience — the technician must understand which contacts are correct and which are data artifacts.

When a virtual articulator is sufficient

    Case Virtual articulator Physical articulator
    Single crown ✓ Sufficient Optional
2–3 unit bridge ✓ Sufficient Optional
Full-arch reconstruction ✓ With individual registration Recommended as verification
Vertical dimension change Requires individual parameters ✓ Recommended
Patient with TMJ dysfunction Limited ✓ Recommended
